Syrian War Daily – 14th of February 2018

Hello and welcome to the 337th installment of the SWD.

Military events/news are listed below by the governorates:

Aleppo:

Turkey-backed Free Syrian Army, backed by Turkish Air and Land Forces captured one locality from the Syrian Democratic Forces’ YPG in Afrin region, as a part of the operation ‘Olive Branch’ (AR: Ghasin al-Zaytun, TR: Zeytin Dalı). Free Syrian Army reportedly captured Qudah village in Rajo subdistrict. However, reports suggest that the YPG recaptured Qudah, so it should be considered as disputed for now. Two elements of the Free Syrian Army’s Firqat al-Hamza were killed during the battles for Qudah.

Turkey-backed Free Syrian Army repelled infiltration attempt by the Syrian Democratic Forces’ YPG on Arshali village in Jindires subdistrict. According to the Free Syrian Army’s Jaysh al-Sharqiya, three YPG‘s elements were killed and one captured in the failed infiltration attempt.

Kurdish Red Crescent reported that Turkish Armed Forces’ shelling of Afrin killed one and wounded five civilians. The organization also stated that three civilians were wounded in Bulbul subdistrict and two in Sharran subdistrict.

Left over Islamic State’s improvised explosive device exploded on the road between Al-Bab and Al-Sukariya, killing two and wounding five civilians.

Idlib:

Russian Air Force conducted air raids over Sarja, Maar Tahroma (Maaret Hurmah), and Ariha in Idlib governorate. Reports suggest that four civilians were killed and six wounded by the air raids over Maar Tahroma.

Three Islamic State’s elements surrendered to Hayat Tahrir al-Sham at the outskirts of Ard al-Zarzour in the southeastern Idlib. Separately, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham’s Ibaa News Agency reported that three Islamic State’s elements were arrested in Khan Sheikhoun (Shaykhun) and two in Jarjanaz.

Turkish Armed Forces’ convoy visited Al-Sarman, Wadi al-Dayf, Al-Ghadafa, and Jarjanaz in the eastern Idlib, in order to find new positions for observations points. According to the reports, the next observation point will be in the vicinity of Al-Sarman silos.

Hayat Tahrir al-Sham cleared Taftanaz Military Airbase from the wreckages of the Syrian Arab Air Forces’ helicopters. Reports suggest that Hayat Tahrir al-Sham transported the wreckages to Hama in order to sell them as scrap metal. However, several sources claimed that the wreckages were taken to an unknown location and the airbase was cleared in order to allow Turkish Armed Forces to establish an observation point in it.

Deir al-Zour:

Islamic State’s Amaq Agency reported that five elements of the Syrian Democratic Forces were killed and wounded by an anti-tank guided missile in the village of Al-Bahra in the eastern Deir al-Zour. Separately, Syrian Democratic Forces’ element was reportedly killed by a sniper in Al-Bahra.

Damascus:

Rebel forces in the East Ghouta shelled Al-Abbasiyin and Ash al-Warwar neighborhoods of the city of Damascus. According to the Syrian Arab News Agency, one civilian was wounded by the shelling of Ash al-Warwar neighborhood.

Syrian Arab Red Crescent in cooperation with the United Nations, delivered a humanitarian aid convoy to Douma, Awtaya, and Al-Nashabiyah in the East Ghouta. Two aid trucks entered Douma, while the remaining seven entered the latter two localities in Al-Marj area.

Faylaq al-Rahman released a statement saying that its “engineering battalion” blew up a series of Syrian Arab Army’s tunnels in the area between Jobar and Ain Terma in the East Ghouta.

Islamic State launched an attack against Hayat Tahrir al-Sham in Al-Yarmouk camp, south of Damascus. Islamic State reportedly captured Haifa street in the camp, after Hayat Tahrir al-Sham withdrew from it.

Afghanistan

Faryab Province:

Afghan National Security Forces killed eight, wounded 14, and arrested nine elements of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (Taliban) in Qaysar district.

Takhar Province:

Afghan National Security Forces killed two and wounded two elements of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in Yangi Qala district. However, Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’s Al-Emarah News stated that the group seized control of vast areas within Yangi Qala district.

Kunduz Province:

Kunar Province:

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan raided Afghan National Police’s checkpoint in Sirkani district, wounding two policemen. Separately, Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan destroyed Afghan National Army’s tank in Sirkani district.

Nangarhar Province:

Logar Province:

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’s improvised explosive device killed Afghan Local Police’s commander and wounded two policemen in the city of Mihtarlam, capital of Logar Province.

Herat Province:

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan ambushed Afghan National Army’s foot patrol in Andi area of Obe district. One element of the Afghan National Army was killed and one element of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan wounded in the encounter.

Farah Province:

Afghan National Security Forces killed three and wounded seven elements of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in Pusht Rod district.

Urozgan Province:

Afghan National Security Forces killed two, wounded one, and arrested one element of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in the city of Tarinkot, capital of Urozgan Province.

Nimruz Province:

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan raided Afghan National Army’s checkpoint in Khair Abad area of Khash Rod district, killing one soldier.

Helmand Province:

Afghan National Security Forces killed four elements of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, as well as destroyed 22 fighting positions, three vehicles, three motorcycles, and several weapons depots and ammunition caches in Nad Ali, Jerashk, Kajaki, and Nahri Saraj districts.

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan raided Afghan National Police’s checkpoint in Peer Sabz Kala area of the 2nd Police District in the city of Lashkar Gah, capital of Helmand Province. Reports suggest that six elements of the Afghan National Police were killed in the encounter.

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan attacked and targeted with improvised explosive devices Afghan National Security Forces’ convoy arriving to Balochano area of Nahri Saraj district. According to the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, two armored personnel carriers were destroyed and 12 elements of the Afghan National Security Forces killed and wounded. Two elements of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan were killed and two wounded in the engagement.

Kandahar Province:

Afghan National Security Forces conducted large-scale operations against the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in Nesh district, killing 35 elements of the group, according to the Afghan Ministry of Defense. Afghan National Security Forces also destroyed seven vehicles and several weapons depots and ammunition caches during the operations.

CJTF-OIR:

CJTF-OIR announced a change in their publishing policy. Now two strikes reports will be published each week, on Mondays and Fridays.
